The Other Side Of Fashion Over 50!

Fashion is a creative outlet and being over 50 is no reason to shy away from your creative side when it comes to fashion. Fashion allows you to show the world  what resides deep in your soul.  Just looking at colors and textures ignites my senses  in ways nothing else can. I spent many years finding my true fashion soul.

“Ironically, when you know who you are on the inside, it can be much easier to roll with outside forces”. Unexamined conformity, on the other hand , is down right lazy. Choice is like a muscle. If you work it enough, you make stronger decisions, decisions that carry you forward in the direction of your dreams.”

~Authenticity Is A Force Of Nature~

There are no rules in becoming who you are authentically meant to be. The true nature of authenticity is acceptance.

Whether we  like to admit  it or not, most women have old tapes running in  their heads about how society, family and friends thinks they  should dress. Forget about all the judgements and whims of others, it’s all temporary anyway.

I say,” forget about the status quo and let your freak flag fly!”  Granted, you have to feel like yourself, but most women work in conservative  jobs on a daily basis and never get the chance to experiment with fun, exciting fashion trends.  You can take any current seasonal trend and  make it your own, you just can’t be afraid to get noticed.  Pleasing yourself is paramount. Fashion is the easiest way to build self esteem and confidence without looking outside yourself. It’s personal and it constantly calls to you to step forth to be your authentic self.

Part of creating your fashion persona over 50 is that you finally don’t give a fuck about what other people think, you’ve earned the right to experiment and find your voice. All this goes without saying that anything you do, do it with taste and class! You can dress in the most avant-garde clothing or your favorite jeans and feel amazing.  All you have to do is search your heart and  be brutally honest about what makes you feel comfortable and totally you. If you’ve never asked yourself what resonates with you and your personality  take the time now to sit and think about it.  Some questions to ask yourself are :

  • Do I feel alive and excited when I scan my closet in the morning?
  •  Do I need to get rid of clothes that I never wear?
  • Do I need to step out of my comfort zone  when I go shopping  and  buy clothes that I love, but know my family will question as authentically me?
  •  Do I follow my heart and dress in ways that allow me  to feel empowered and strong?

Women tend to look older than their age when they succumb to others ideals and ideas of what they should look like at any stage of their life. Be it  husbands who want you to dress in a certain way or children and friends who can’t identify with your style or inner creative genius!

“Self expression is not an either -or formula. It is, in Carl Jung’s words, “magnificently affirmative of both – and.” You can be traditional and avant-grade, opportunistic and socially responsible, serene and flamboyant. It’s all good if it’s all real. It is infinitely better to be fully yourself with myriad contradictions than to be an indirect, inauthentic version of yourself. Identities are crackled, colorful kaleidoscopes. And it’s the whole package of talents and flaws and preferences  that make  us infinitely more interesting.”
